For 76 years, the Pasadena Livestock Show & Rodeo (PLSR) has been a celebration of tradition, hard work, and community spirit. It’s not just about the rodeo dust or the clatter of boots in the arena, it’s about the values that bind Pasadena together: a Big Heart, a passion for local youth, and a legacy rooted in Southeast Texas’ unique blend of boots, bayous, and berries.

Building a Legacy Since 1949

Founded in 1949 and officially chartered in 1950, the Pasadena Livestock Show & Rodeo began as a simple vision: preserve agricultural heritage while investing in the youth of Pasadena and surrounding communities.

That vision has flourished. Over the years, the organization has awarded more than $20 million in scholarships and support, opening doors for students across Pasadena, Deer Park, La Porte, Galena Park, and Clear Creek ISDs.

Each fall, the Ag Barn fills with student projects, livestock competitions, and dreams of championship banners. But beyond the ribbons and prizes, these young participants walk away with confidence, character, and lifelong memories.

More Than a Rodeo: A Community Celebration

The PLSR has grown into a full-scale Southeast Texas tradition. Alongside rodeo performances, families gather for the parade, carnival, concerts, and the ever-popular BBQ cook-off.

The event reflects Pasadena’s unique flavor, where bayous meet barbecue, and strawberries symbolize a community known for its berry festivals and hometown pride. It’s a time when the entire region comes together, neighbors helping neighbors, and a whole city reminding the world that Pasadena has a Big Heart.

Sherry Free: Leading With Passion and Community Spirit

At the helm of this legacy is Sherry Free, Executive Director of the Pasadena Livestock Show & Rodeo. A part of the organization since 1992, Sherry’s journey from volunteer to executive leader embodies the community-first values the Rodeo stands for.

Her leadership extends far beyond the arena. Sherry has served as President of Texas Young Farmers, held board roles with the Texas Association of Fairs and Events, and currently serves on the Texas Music Friendly Committee with Visit Pasadena—helping promote the cultural heartbeat of the region through music and events.

Her philosophy is forward-looking: “While our roots are in the past, our eyes are on the future. This anniversary is not just a celebration of where we’ve been but a recommitment to where we’re going”.

A Future Full of Promise

In 2024 alone, the Rodeo invested $650,000 in scholarships and support for local students, a number that continues to grow. As PLSR celebrates its 76th year, the commitment to empowering youth and uplifting the community remains stronger than ever.

Whether you’re drawn by the thrill of the rodeo, the joy of carnival rides, the smell of smoky barbecue, or the pride of supporting local students, one thing is certain: the Pasadena Livestock Show & Rodeo is more than an event, it’s a testament to a community with boots on the ground, bayous in its soul, berries in its history, and a Big Heart at its core.
