I’ll admit that McDonald’s Lil Happy Meal miniatures promotion got me this month. It’s been a mini joy ride of guilty-pleasure ordering McNuggets, fries and a Diet Coke as I try to collect all 21 toys (I’m at 13 and have about another week left).

Lest you think I’m slacking on my restaurant critic duties, however, in July I also found myself everywhere from fine-dining establishments to a closet-sized pizza parlor just off the Katy Freeway and Beltway. Comfort foods struck a nostalgic chord. Ice cream and peaches straight from the fridge cooled me down. I even fit in some greens to balance it all out.

Armand Bayou Nature Center

This is the best place to get outside in Pasadena! You can hike along miles of trails at your own pace, and enjoy various lookouts and viewing platforms to observe local wildlife. You can rent kayaks to get out on the water, and attend one of the dozens of events held throughout the year.

After spending the morning at the space and flight museums, head to the waterpark to cool off. This park is open from May through July and includes a lazy river, slides, and splash pads. Kids of all ages can have fun, while parents relax in the refreshing water.
